Obituary Overview
Forever in Our Hearts

With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of 
Gary George Nickerson on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the Dorothy Ley Hospice. 
Born on May 20, 1946, in Shirley, Birmingham, England, Gary eventually made 
his way to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where his family roots lay, and took g
reat pride in his Indigenous heritage as a member of the Acadia First Nation.

Gary was known for his humor, charisma, and the boundless love he had for 
his family and friends. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Sheila (née Crawford), 
whose unwavering support and love were the foundation of his life. Gary?s 
legacy lives on through his children, Kevin, Karen (Jon), and Kelly (Curtis), 
and his beloved grandchildren, Alex, Mark, Owen, Austin, Emma-Jean, and Ivy, 
who were the true joy of his life. He will also be deeply missed by his cousin 
Stephen, affectionately known as "Dork" (Denise), whom Gary always considered a brother.

Gary had a distinguished career as a commercial appraiser, underpinned by a strong 
educational background. However, his passions extended far beyond his work. A man 
of eclectic interests, Gary was an admittedly terrible golfer, but he had a deep love 
for science fiction, war movies, fast cars, airplanes, and history. He found immense 
joy in cultivating his garden, often spending hours outdoors, shirtless and barefoot, 
soaking in the beauty he created, sunscreen be damned.

Gary?s life was rich with friendships and family bonds. He will be remembered for 
his generous spirit, sharp wit, and the wisdom he brought to every conversation.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at 
Glen Oaks Funeral Home, 3164 Ninth Line, Oakville, followed by a Funeral Service at 
11:00 a.m. Gary will be laid to rest immediately afterward at Glen Oaks Cemetery. A 
reception will follow at the funeral home, where all are welcome to share stories, 
memories, and a meal in honor of Gary?s life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Dorothy 
Ley Hospice, whose exceptional care and support provided comfort during Gary's final days.
Gary?s memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. 
Though his presence will be deeply missed, the love he shared and the memories he created 
will endure.
